Through the “Comprehensive Soil Management” Project, the Chimborazo Prefecture delivered 60 quintals of oat seeds and 15 of vicia, to the inhabitants of limited economic resources of the Bilbao parish of the Penipe canton, in the sectors that were affected during the activation time of the Tungurahua volcano.
More than 100 families benefit from this project, whose objective is the recovery of natural resources, as well as the strengthening of soils and vegetation cover in degraded lands.
Jorge Velasco, natural resources analyst of the Provincial Government’s Environmental Management Directorate, in coordination with the Bilbao parish council, made this delivery to biologically recover the properties of the soil. “The oats will serve as organic matter, while the vices as nitrogen,” said the official.
For her part, Consuelo Heredia, president of the parish GAD, explained that the main cause of the deterioration of their lands is due to the constant activation processes of the Tungurahua volcano, over the years. “It is a very great help that they are giving us, for our fields, which will be reborn and we will be able to use them again for agriculture.”
This delivery is in addition to the interventions carried out in the Cacha parish of the Riobamba canton and in the Matriz de Guamote parish, the project also includes the land clearing that has already been previously executed in all the areas where this initiative has been activated to favor of the chimboracenses.
