Family gardens in Riobamba neighborhoods promote food independence and income generation

The Prefecture of Chimborazo, under the Directorate of Productive Development, promote the strategic project “Family and Urban Agriculture” in the periferic neighborhood of Riobamba called “El Pedregal” that includes the formation of “Neighborhood Schools”, with the aim of executing actions organizational strengthening, home gardens, minor species and healthy eating workshops.

Juan Pablo Cruz, prefect of the Province, expressed the importance of coordinated work and the benefits of promoting this type of project, “it is necessary to strengthen the schools of Urban Agriculture to have a strong associativity that allows the processes with inclusive fairs and the articulation of the different prefectures through agreements ”, he said.

In addition, 28,000 vegetable seeds of 10 different species were delivered to the members of the “School of Rural Urban Family Strategy”.

“We have worked since the beginning of our administration, allowing the population to have food independence and generate economic income for families in the sector,” said the Prefect of the Province.

For his part, Xavier Checa, coordinator of Productive Development, explained that, based on the guidelines and strategies of the Prefect, it has been necessary to link with the peripheral neighborhoods, promoting horticultural gardens, the development of bioles and later the implementation of species minors.

Technicians from the Directorate of Productive Development routinely train farmers on the planting of vegetable plants, care and the production of bioles for the protection of their crops.

“From the beginning of the pandemic we started as an alternative to obtain organic products for our subsistence, a better diet for our children, older adults in the sector, and later, to promote orchards as sources of income for our families.”, Indicated Vicente Paguay, President of the School of Rural Urban Family Strategy.

Since 2020, the project of family gardens in the peripheral neighborhoods was promoted with the delivery of certified seeds that benefit 39 families, currently there are 10 schools throughout the province, with a total of 196 participants.
